Water-based coatings are poised for a rise

Author:

With the popularization of environmental protection concepts, water-based coatings, as environmentally friendly products, have been increasingly recognized by consumers. Industry experts said that they hope coating companies will conduct in-depth research and development, make breakthroughs in product quality, and expand the market by leveraging the demand for environmental protection.

Home decoration coatings have always attracted widespread consumer attention due to their close relationship with home life and the environment. For a long time, oil-based coatings have been used as the main home decoration coating products due to their rich colors. However, in recent years, more and more evidence has shown that traditional oil-based coatings affect people's health to a certain extent. Therefore, environmentally friendly coatings are increasingly favored by consumers.

Water-based coatings, as environmentally friendly products, have been increasingly recognized by consumers. However, due to factors such as price and decorative effects, water-based coatings have not yet become mainstream products in the market, and consumers' understanding of water-based coatings needs to be improved.

At present, according to incomplete statistics, the usage rate of water-based paints in China is less than 10%, and the market presents a pattern of "industry heat and market cold".

Although water-based coatings are beginning to be accepted and recognized by more consumers, oil-based coatings still dominate the larger mid-to-low consumer market.

Professionals say that the biggest advantage of water-based coatings is environmental protection, but because the coating effects of most domestic water-based coatings cannot yet fully reach the same effect as traditional coatings, and the coating process of water-based coatings is greatly affected by the construction environment, and the construction cycle is longer. Therefore, water-based coatings are still difficult to truly occupy the market. Coating companies should produce products that adapt to different environments. If product quality upgrades cannot be achieved, water-based coatings will be difficult to be widely accepted by the market.

However, the industry remains optimistic about the future prospects of water-based coatings. The health and environmental protection characteristics of water-based coatings have shown a continuously improving trend in recent years' sales markets. The market prospects for water-based coatings are huge. For many domestic coating companies, increasing research and development efforts, breaking through technological bottlenecks, and continuously improving and enhancing their performance are important measures. At the same time, vigorously promoting sales terminals and cultivating market demand are indispensable. Coating companies should not only pay attention to product quality and health indicators, but also devote more energy to cultivating the consumer market. Professionals believe that the industrialization of products requires the joint efforts of all enterprises. On the one hand, it requires the attention and support of relevant departments. On the other hand, enterprises need to reach a consensus with home furnishing companies, and more importantly, popularize the knowledge of water-based coatings to consumers and promote product advantages.

Domestic coating companies, including those that have recently launched water-based coatings, have made technological breakthroughs in product development.

For the coatings industry, reducing VOC emissions is a very important means of water-based coatings. Currently, the water-based proportion of indoor decorative coatings, furniture coatings, anticorrosion coatings, and automotive coatings is gradually increasing. At present, the state has formulated GB 18582-2008 "Indoor Decoration and Renovation Materials, Limits of Harmful Substances in Interior Wall Coatings", GB 24410-2009 "Indoor Decoration and Renovation Materials, Limits of Harmful Substances in Water-Based Wood Coatings", and other national standards to ensure the healthy and orderly development of the water-based coatings industry. However, to truly achieve the industrialization of water-based coatings is not the effort of a few companies, nor can it be easily achieved in the short term, but requires the joint efforts of the entire industry.
